The Challenges

Automotive component makers have long pursued a reduction in weight for their products, a trend shaping the entire market. Already, a wide range of automotive parts are lightweight, and the trend appears to continue for a while.

For automotive body parts, materials should be lightweight and at the same time contain high modulus and impact strength comparable to the existing metallic materials. Therefore, if plastic material is adopted, it has to come with greatly improved material properties. In particular, exterior parts are designed to absorb strong impact. In this regard, the material for exterior parts requires a balanced mix of material properties. No wonder, then, that global automotive makers increasingly want to secure a new line of high-quality materials for Front Grille, one of key exterior parts. The material in question should come with high impact strength, high flowability, dimensional stability and good appearance.


The Solutions

Automotive Front Grill is a relatively big in size compared with other exterior parts, and complex in design. It is the component that tends to sustain impact first when a collision occurs. In consideration of its function, the material for Front Grille requires excellent dimensional stability, flowability and impact strength.

LOTTE Chemical has developed and proposed AE-2030, a breakthrough that came from the alloy of PC with high impact strength and PET with excellent flowability. Its outstanding impact strength is optimized for exterior parts. The dramatic improvement in the PC-PET miscibility and the reduction in out-gassing in the injection molding allow for high gloss surface and good paintability. At the same time, AE-2030 minimizes the gap between plastic and metal materials in low temperatures, thereby securing excellent dimensional stability.
