The Challenges

As the global TV market is moving toward slimmer design, TV manufacturers are making great efforts to pull off ultra-thin design in both TV panels and TV housing. Against this backdrop, ‘A’ company, a renowned TV maker, has attempted to apply ultra-slim design to its TV housing (front bezel, rear cover, middle chassis).

LOTTE Chemical worked together with the TV manufacturer from the design stage to develop materials suitable for Super Narrow Bezel (SNB), reviewing technologies involved and responding to customer requests. As a result, LOTTE Chemical selected and proposed INFINO® High Modulus PC/ABS/GF HM, LS Series as the key material lineup.

The Solutions

The materials for TV SNB should come with excellent strength as well as the capability of providing superior surface quality. For securing necessary strength level, LOTTE Chemical utilized a set of material characteristics guide based on filler’s type (Talc, W-Filler, GF) and analyzed appearance, dimension, injection impact. Thanks to the intricate analysis, the company has come up with the optimal content level of inorganic substance tailored for excellent strength and surface quality.

In addition, LOTTE Chemical’s proprietary technologies allowed for the minimal protrusion on GF surface, dramatically lowering the chance of surface quality degradation. The company also provided technical solutions such as injection gate position and steam temperature control in order to minimize surface quality degradation linked to the GF protrusion and additional Filler.

At  the  same  time,  the  company  has  set  up  a  practical  impact  assessment  database  for  TV, highlighting the excellent Rib, Boss impact strength levels of INFINO® High Modulus PC/ABS/GF.

From the planning stage for new product development, LOTTE Chemical has responded quickly to customer demand and provided continued material total solutions. All in all, INFINO® High Modulus PC/ABS/GF has been approved and applied as TV SNB material.

INFINO® High Modulus PC/ABS/GF, featuring excellent material properties and surface quality, provides superior high-gloss (metal level) and expanded flatness, which allows for the omission of painting process. As the series also offers excellent dimensional stability and impact strength, it lowers Rib, Boss cracks in a way that ensures design freedom. In addition, the series helps lower the defect rate and slash product costs thanks to high impact strength and reliability.
