Technology Guide

This section introduces Lotte Chemical’s production and processing technology and processes for each plant.

Plant #1 > GE

Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether and Diethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether are solvents that are widely used in water-based paints and are also used as solvents for Nitro cellulose, Alkyd resin and Phenolic resin that is modified by maleic anhydride. It is fog-proof, wrinkle-resisted and can improve the gloss and fluidity of the coating. It is also used as metal cleaning agent, paint remover, lubricant remover, car engine cleaning agent, dry-cleaning solvent, epoxy solvent, drug extraction, pesticide dispersants and oil dispersion mutual solvent of printing ink, cutting oil and fiber oil. It is also used as solvents for nitrocellulose, varnish, printing ink, printing ink for stamp, oil and resin, as stabilizers for latex, as evaporation inhibitor for aircraft coating and surface improved processing agent for high-temperature baking enamels.

01 Raw Material Storage Tank

A tank where the raw materials Butanol and HPEO (High-Purity Ethylene Oxide) are stored Butanol is received by ship and land, and HPEO produced in the EG plant within the complex is used.

02 GE Reactor

Crude GE (Glycol Ether) is produced by feeding butanol and HPEO and having them react. It is a 3-stage pipe-shaped reactor that uses KOH as a catalyst. The method for producing GE is adopted, wherein HPEO is fed into an excess of butanol so that it can react.

03 Butanol Recovery Process

A process where butanol is recovered from the crude GE produced in the GE reactor The recovered butanol is transferred to the front of the reactor for reuse as fuel.

04 GE Refining Process

A process where the crude GE cleared of butanol is refined by grade. The method of refining through fractional distillation using the differences in boiling points of products by grade is adopted. BG, BDG, and BTC are produced and transferred to each storage tank.

05 Product Storage Tank

The tank where the products produced through the GE refining process are stored. Products are stored by grade and delivered by sea and land.

06 Delivery (land, sea)

Sea delivery is made through a pipe, and land delivery is made by tank truck and in drums. For sea delivery, pipes are connected to the pier for delivery by ship. In the case of land delivery, tank truck delivery equipment and drum packaging equipment are in the plant for direct delivery operations.
