This section introduces Lotte Chemical’s production and processing technology and processes for each plant.

Plant #1 > SM

SM products are produced using ethylene and benzene produced in the naphtha (NC) plant by introducing the badger process. They are used for PS resin, ABS resin, SBR latex, synthetic resin-based paint, ion exchange resin, etc.

01 Alkylation reactor

The Alkylation reactor makes the raw materials benzene and ethylene react at high temperature and under constant pressure to be converted into EB (Ethylbenzene). Overall ethylene conversion rate is more than 99.5%.

02 Benzene Recovery Process

A process where non-reactive benzene in the reactor is recovered The recovered benzene is catalyzed by the transalkylation reaction and reused.


03 EB Refining Process

A process where pure EB is separated from crude EB (Ethylbenzene) created in the reactor. The separated EB is transferred to a storage tank and sent to the SM unit.

04 SM Reactor

Dilution steam and EB (Ethylbenzene) are fed/mixed into the SM reactor filled with dehydrogenation catalyst, and hydrogen is separated from EB to create SM (Styrene Monomer).

05-1 Hydrogen Separation Process

A process where pure hydrogen is separated from the hydrogen created in the SM reactor by eliminating impurities from it.

05-2 EB/BZ/Toluene Recovery Process

A process where non-reactive EB and benzene/toluene created with side reaction are separated from the reactor.

06 SM Refining Process

A process where pure SM is separated from the crude SM (Styrene Monomer) created in the reactor, and a heavy substance residue is created as a byproduct of the separated SM.
